Swizz Beatz Purchases Stake in Monster Audio Headphones

Monster Audio has announced that artist/DJ Swizz Beatz has purchased an undisclosed stake in the headphone company. The deal means Mr.Beatz (no pun intended) will join the executive board, and will have a say in corporate strategy. We probably won't know how much share he actually bought, but I assume it's not much. Swizz's wife, Alicia Keys, recently became the global creative director of BlackBerry, so it looks like hooking up with tech companies runs in the family.

Monster Audio Partners with Viacom on New DNA Headphones

Monster Audio continues its revolution of the headphone market with another new marketing scheme. First, they sign rapper/producer, Dr.Dre, and create the Beats by Dre headphone line. Next, they partner with upscale clothing brand, Diesel. Today, Monster announced they will be collaborating with television giant Viacom for their newest product, the DNA Headphones.

With the deal, the new DNA Headphones will be on display all over Viacom's cable television channels, specifically MTV and VH1. During this Thursday's MTV Video Music Awards, each presenter and performer will receive special chrome versions of the new headphones.

Monster hasn't revealed much about the new DNA Headphones, although they have announced the headphones include a new "sound technology." The headphones have a September release in the United States, and an October release in Europe. The over-ear model will retail for $200 and will be available in black, white, cobalt blue and teal. The in-ear model will set you back $100, and are available in black and white.

Monster Audio & Beats by Dre Split

The headphone collaboration between Monster Audio and Beats by Dre is no more. What most might consider one of the most successful collaborations of the consumer electronics industry in the last decade is over, but not before revolutionizing the headphone industry. Not surprisingly, the reason behind the split was a disagreement over profit sharing and the reasons for the line's success. Monster felt like the success was due to the great product and audio quality while Beats by Dre executives, Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre, thought it was due to the marketing, product placement, and name recognition. Earlier this week, Lee was asked if Monster would be willing to partner with another high-profile musician again and he said yes, but interestingly went onto say that "star power only takes you so far - the product itself has to be phenomenal." This seems to me like it's a slight dig at Dre and Jimmy, but maybe it's just me.

Regardless of who was right or wrong, we will now see what ways both companies turn. Monster Audio has already announced a number of new "Celebrity" headphones at the recent CES convention earlier this month in Las Vegas. As soon as I get all the information, I will be sure to write a full post about all of the new product announcements. Another reason why Monster Audio has decided to drop Beats Audio is their newest venture in the headphone world, SOL Republic. The son of Monster Audio President, Noel Lee, has created a new headphone maker earlier this year, so expect more product announcements out of Sol Republic now that Beats is out of the picture. Don't be surprised if SOL Republic announces a new line of headphones by a famous artist (they already have an endorsement deal with Steve Aoki). My money is on another famous DJ, but this is all speculation.

When asked about the split, Lee said, "We had a great run together. We couldn't have done it without Jimmy [Iovine] and Dre, but they have a different vision of what Beats wants to be, and we want to go onto our next phase of audio and headphones. It ran the course, and it's time for both of us companies to do our own thing."

As soon as I heard of the split, I got flashbacks to May, when 50 Cent announced he was cutting out Sleek Audio and would be creating his own audio line. Just like 50, it seems like Jimmy and Dre want full control of their business venture. 50 Cent bought a small audio company, Kono Audio, and developed his own audio company, SMS Audio. This way he has all the power in addition to all the risk. Even though Beats Audio is very different than 50 Cent's SMS Audio, it still always comes down to money, ego and control of the business.

Vivienne Tam Butterfly Monster Headphones

The Butterfly Headphones by Monster are designed by fashion designer, Vivenne Tam. These headphones are very different than any other of Monster's in-ear headphones like the Miles Davis Tributes or the Tron T3's. While we are used to cutting edge and sleek looking headphones from Monster, the Butterfly's are have a feminine and elegant look. The champagne gold metal combined with the little Butterfly design is unique, yet feminine.

While the Butterfly headphones sound really good, but the bass could be a lot better. I understand why they wouldn't put such an emphasis on bass with these headphones since the target demographic is different than their other products. The people that are buying the Butterfly Vivienne Tam headphones probably aren't going to want as much bass as those who are buying Beats by Dre in-ear headphones like the Diddy Beats. While the Vivienne Tam Butterfly Monster In-Ear Headphones aren't for everyone, those who like the overall design will be happy with the overall sound quality of the product.

Special Edition Dr. Dre Detox Pro Beats Headphones

While the release of Dr. Dre's final album, Detox, might be unknown, the Special Edition Detox Headphones are currently available. This limited edition headphone is the same as the Pro Beats with a few minor changes. The largest change is the paint job, which has been murdered out meaning it has been painted all black. The second difference is that on the top portion of the headphone, they swapped out the standard "Beats by Dre" brand logo for the Dr.Dre Detox Album logo. The third and final change is the carrying case has the same Detox designation as the headband. These three differences are going to cost you around $100 more than the original Pro's.

The Beats Pro by Dr. Dre

The Beats Pro by Dr. Dre are serious headphones in every way. With the extremely large size, expensive price tag, and overall styling, the Beats Pro are not kidding around.  If you must have a Beats headphone and the Studio ones aren't doing it for you, then the Pros are your only option.

The Bears Pro's are not intended for the casual music listener, but for the DJ or music audiophile. Monster has given the Pro's a good number of features. There is a dual input/output audio port for communal listening (also found in the UrbanEars Plattans). Ear cushions can be removed to be cleaned or replaced. Another nice design feature is the ability to place the thick rubber red cord into either earcup. Since they don't require batteries, not all MP3 players (like the Ipod Shuffle) are able to output enough power for the headphones. Depending on who you are or what you plan on using the headphones with, this could be a pro or con. While durability is a problem with other Beats models, the Pro's construction is top-notch. A common drop on the floor or toss on a table is not going to mess them up at all. One problem I found with them is that although they are large in size, they don't fit snug on the head. Therefore, if you are bumping your head to the strong bass there is a good chance the headphones will slide off.

Every model in the Beats by Dre line emphasizes bass, and these are no exception. The amount of bass is great but the overpowered highs and mids is not. With that said, sound quality is definitely above average. The big drawback to the Pro's, and all Beats headphones for that matter, is the price. While there is no question they are a little overpriced, the Monster Pro Beats by Dre are intended for the DJ who wants a stylish set of headphones for when they are spinning on stage. They are available in 2 colors: Black & White.

Tron T3 Monster In-Ear Headphones

The Monster Tron T3 headphones are incredibly uniquely designed in-earbuds that feature a stylish look at a reasonable price. They have the same Tron logo that the over-ear Daft Punk Monster Tron T1 Headphones have that I reviewed earlier. They have the signature Flat Cord that is on every new Monster headphone. The headphones come with 3 eartips for maximum comfort. If you prefer small in-ear headphones, and like the Tron design, then these are a great option.

Miles Davis Monster Tribute Headphones

The Miles Davis Tribute Headphones were made by Monster to be a collector's item that could be appreciated by audiophiles and fans alike. Miles Davis was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. His impact in jazz is like no other.  Monster wanted to immortalize Miles Davis by making a signature headphone that is highest in quality and construction.

Since these are Monster's top of line headphones, they don't come cheap. Monster has thrown in more accessories into the package than any other headphone I have ever seen. It includes 3 luxurious cases for protecting your earbuds. The package also includes a special 2-CD Legacy Edition of Miles Davis' classic 1959 recording, Kind of Blue. The style of the headphones is elegant and stylish.  One side features Monster's logo and the other has the Miles Davis logo. The earbuds themselves are heavy because they are plated in 24k gold. Fortunately, there is no discomfort from the weight because of the vast options of eartips that are customized for nearly any ear size. These earbuds feature Monster's patented Super Tips that were created to provide superior noise isolation, powerful bass, and precise sound reproduction. One feature that I really liked about these headphones is that they have a lifetime warranty. Monster will replace the headphones even if you break them yourself! The Miles Davis Monster Tribute Headphones are quite expensive, but well worth it, as they are some of the best headphones on the market.

Daft Punk Monster Tron T1 Headphones

Monster Audio has released a pair of headphones in collaboration with Daft Punk and with Disney's new film, Tron. These headphones were debuted in January at CES 2011. They have a unique and modern design and will surely draw attention from others. They are relatively large (about the same size as Dre Beats) and are futuristically styled with lights on both sides.

The headphones use Monster's Noise Isolation Technology to block out external sound. The unique aspect of these headphones is the LED Light Drive System on the outside. Monster has tried to recreate the light animations captured in Tron: Legacy. The Daft Punk version of these headphones are white, instead of black, and are being created in limited supply. These limited edition headphones have the Daft Punk logo above the right ear cup. Monster throws in a special edition Tron Sountrack into the package, as well as a soft pouch and cleaning cloth. Overall these are a decent pair of headphones if you like the design, light up features or are just a big fan of Daft Punk or Tron.
